Introduction

A computer can make so many tasks of the genealogist much easier to accomplish. But the computer is a tool you have to learn how to use if you want to harness the power it gives you. When you first start using a computer there are so many things to learn that it can be overwhelming. Many new users just barely learn to get around and then use their computers in a way that turns it into an electric typewriter. But learning just a few tricks can make the computer so much more useful and save lots of time and effort.

These tips will help you be more productive using your computer but I highly recommend ALL computer users take a training class - at the local college, via videotape or CD, or by reading a good how-to book. There are too many things to learn to pick up everything in short sessions like this.

Also, there are utilities you can add that are easier to use than the utilities provided as part of Windows. The BEST $20.00 I ever spent on software is for:
NoteTab Pro from
http://www.notetab.com/

You'll see me using this during the presentation today so I mention it first. Even if I will be doing a final version of a document in Word to access some of its features, I always do my first drafts in NoteTab Pro and I use it to create our websites.

Just some of the most basic features it offers are:
- replace Microsoft Notepad with NoteTab Pro so ANY .txt file is opened in NoteTab Pro and you never have to see Notepad
- use as clipboard feature - automatically pastes text I have "copied" into a file and I don't even have to move into the window where that file is open
- insert date / time with 2 clicks of the mouse
- favorites - so I don't have to remember where I placed a file or navigate to that folder to open the file
- HTML creation tools, PERL support, HTML verification tools are easily added
- and much more
