Windows 98 - Find a word or phrase within a File
- Let the COMPUTER Do the WORK

When viewing a long file or Web page and looking for a particular word or phrase - let the computer do the work so you don't have to read or scan the file contents.
  • Many applications have the find option under the EDIT menu:
Edit / Find (IE, Mozilla, Netscape, Word )
  • Some applications have find under other menus:
    Search / Find (NoteTab Pro)
  • CTRL/F is a keyboard shortcut to the find menu within most applications

Be careful of options used with FIND
  • Most applications can be told whether to do a case sensitive search or whether only whole words should be searched
  • Mozilla/Netscape searches from the point where the cursor is currently located to the end of the document UNLESS you tell it to "wrap around" - so if you start a search after you've already scrolled past the item you are looking for it will not be found unless you specify "wrap around" or click at the top of the file / document.

Windows 98 - Finding Lost Files

Start / Find brings up the find window where you can
find by name
  • search by name (or partial name) (some Windows versions used to require an extension so you could enter NAME.* if you weren't sure of the extension used)
    • * and ? wildcards work
  • search by phrase contained in file if you know the EXACT phrase
  • "browse" button lets you change the top level directory where the search will start; if all of your files start in one top level directory a much faster search can be done because a search of Windows folders can be easily eliminated
  • check box lets you specify whether subfolders will be searched (usually leave this checked ON, if you knew exactly which folder something was located in you probably wouldn't be trying to use "find")

Clicking on the "date" tab lets you
find by date
  • search by the time stamps on the file if you know when the file was created or last modified
  • drop down box lets you choose to search using the time a file was created, modified, or accessed (all of these time stamps are kept by the system but most aren't displayed by default)
AND lets you specify a date range, a time stamp within X months or X days

Clicking on the "advanced" tab lets you
find advanced
  • search by file type or size
